I am working on rebuilding a BMW R90S - it had gone into the shop for some engine work and the news was definitely not good. So I am looking through the paper at the motorcycles for sale section and I see an ad for an '89 Savage.
I have never seen a Savage nor do I know exactly what it is - a general idea but nothing specific - I drive into the city and find the house - young fellow about half my age comes to the door and says - yes he has a Savage for sale
Picture this - I want to be riding , my BMW is kakked out and the count will be longer than I thought - the guy has the Savage tarped over - he starts to uncover it - I see chrome yellow on the front fender and that is it - I am having this bike!.
I ask the guy to start it - he offers a ride - I say no thanks I want to listen - he fires up that magnificent engineering job - I notice belt drive-13,000 kms on the speedo - hasn't been twisted or dropped - pipe was not blue so no hard riding ( it is now)
I aks why he is selling the Savage - he turns to a 1978 Honda Civic Automatic and says, " the transmission is going out and I have to replace it". My heart sank and I knew I just had to help the fellow out ( NOT!)
When I go to drive it home =I ask about the gears and am startled at the 4 speed tranny- but a smile spreads over my face - because my last thumper from years in the past - a 1939 Ariel Red Hunter had been the same
Why a Savage - because it just was soooo right
Keep the rubber side down
